Ease

The Watcher

I LIE IN bed sliding my legs against crisp hotel sheets. Dusk hangs as heavy as a shroud outside the window. Night falls and rain looms. Cars honk, trams rattle.

I roll onto my back and press hard on my stomach. It’s soft and yielding, not tight. No baby grows there yet. But one day soon it might. When it does, it will be South’s child. I’ll make sure of it. And I won’t hide it from him like that foolish girl is doing. When I tell him, he’ll be pleased, so happy. He’ll kiss me, then hug me. Hold me way up high.

And then they’ll both be mine. The man and his child. And he’ll make me feel like this all the time. Horny. Alive. Smiling, I trail a hand down my restless body and stroke softly, softly over tingling, hairless folds. Each breath I take burns my throat.

He won’t even remember the other one. The child that almost was. But wasn’t. Never will be. Can’t be.

Won’t, won’t, won’t, won’t. Won’t ever breathe a breath of air.

It’ll be easy. With Mia so gullible, so trusting, the little simpleton will believe anything. And then she’ll leave and fall apart. Her child will die. Or maybe in her anger, she’ll kill it, do the unthinkable and get an abortion. And when she’s gone, South will suffer. And suffer. And suffer. I know it won’t be easy for him. But I’ll be there to help.

And because Mia is going to soundcheck tomorrow afternoon. Because she’s always on time. And because the first thing she’ll do when she arrives is use the backstage bathroom to relieve her stressed bladder, I only need to wait. To listen. And then speak.

And then I’ll be the one. The one who’s there day and night, night and day.

At home. On tour.

There. There. There.

Always there to ease his pain.

Me.
